國際教育班

In 2014, Sheng Kung started a special class called the Global Education Class (國際教育班). This class is special in many ways. For one, they have extra foreign-languages classes - both Japanese and Spanish. In addition, they also take a special class called "Global Issues" (國際議題探索) which focuses on learning about Taiwan, learning about the world, and learning about the pressing issues facing our world. Through this class, students get many opportunities to take the stage and express themselves through a series of different projects. They also get to take part in unique lecture series to learn about Taiwan's indigenous culture, New Taiwanese, and traditional Han culture. The school and teachers hope that this class can really expand their viewpoint and gain a better understanding of their own country and the rest of the world. We hope each of these smart, sharp, dedicated ladies all become true Citizens of the World.

Pen-pal Letters to Hiro High School (Kure, Japan)

posted Dec 21, 2015, 4:33 PM by Peter Lang

Our S2A Ladies have been sending pen-pal letters back and forth with some students from Hiro HS in Kure, Japan. They met some of the students on SKYPE back in November and have been corresponding ever since. After seeing how pretty and cute the cards from the Japanese students were, our students redoubled their efforts and tried to make theirs even better. Hopefully, this put everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Three lucky S2A ladies had the chance to participate in the Kure (Japan) International Festival via SKYPE. The students answered some questions about Taiwanese school life and New Year's celebrations. They also asked some questions for the 10 Japanese high school students there at the event. It was an interesting event, despite some minor technical difficulties. Hopefully we'll get the chance to participate in another SKYPE chat soon!

Visit to Kabuasua Siraya Village (吉貝耍西拉雅族)

On 11/3, our S2A ladies had a great opportunity to visit Kabuasua and learn about the history, culture, and language of the Siraya Tribe, which is recognized by the Tainan City Government as a local tribe. They not only learned a lot of history they can't find in their history books, but also got to visit the village, learn about the religion of the Siraya Tribe, and finished up the day by making some "banana mochi." It was a fantastic day in a beautiful place. Big thanks to 段老師 and all the Siraya team for making it possible. We'll be back soon!!

On 10/24, our S2A ladies had a special opportunity to have a SKYPE chat with some high school students from Hiro High School in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Both our ladies and the Hiro students were nervous at first, but after a few technical difficulties, everyone warmed up and had a good time chatting. The ladies talked about special foods and special festivals, their school lives, and their favorite pop idols and TV shows. It was a great chat and hopefully we get the chance to talk to each other again someday!!

Our 國際教育班 is starting a unit about understanding Tainan's Siraya Tribe, a Pingpu Aboriginal Tribe that has yet to be officially recognized by the government of Taiwan.
There is an excellent website available in English and Chinese available here
Our S2A class will be making a trip to Jibeishua on 11/3 to learn more.
(Some of our teachers even took the time to visit Jibeishua to witness the Night Festival on 10/16)

Discussion Questions for Siraya Tribe

posted Oct 19, 2015, 5:59 PM by Peter Lang   [ updated Oct 19, 2015, 5:59 PM ]

1) What tribe were the videos about?
2) What language were they speaking? Why?
3) What differences did you notice about their religious ceremonies?
4) Why is the history of the Siraya Tribe so different from that of other tribes we have studied before (Amis, Seediq)?
5) Where is the Siraya Tribe now?
